Why this takes two registries

The Kansas City metro sits on a state line, and the two sides of it regulate roofing contractors in fundamentally different ways. A contractor working both sides of State Line Road is answerable to two different systems, or, depending on where they work, to almost none.

Kansas has a statewide registry. Under the Kansas Roofing Registration Act, anyone providing roofing services for a fee in Kansas must register with the Kansas Attorney General. The AG publishes a public directory of registrants and their compliance status, and, importantly, has the power to revoke a registration or seek a court order enjoining a contractor from working in the state. The Attorney General's office is explicit that appearing in the registry "does not constitute an endorsement."

Missouri has no statewide equivalent. There is no Missouri roofing contractor license or registry. A 2021 bill, SB 326, would have required roofing contractors to register with the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance starting January 1, 2023; it received a committee hearing and then died without passing. Similar bills in the same period (HB 471, HB 1215, HB 2576) also failed. As a result, oversight in Missouri is municipal: Kansas City, MO licenses contractors through its City Planning and Development Department under Article XII of the city's Building and Rehabilitation Code, and each surrounding city sets its own rules.

The practical consequence for a homeowner: a Kansas-side contractor can be checked against a single authoritative state list, while a Missouri-side contractor often cannot be checked against anything except the specific city they pulled a permit in. That asymmetry is not a flaw in this page; it is how the two states actually regulate, and knowing it is useful when you're comparing two bids from companies on opposite sides of the line.

How to read these statuses

The Kansas registry uses six distinct statuses, and the differences matter. Three of them, In Good Standing and Exempt, mean the contractor may lawfully provide roofing services. Revoked, Not In Good Standing, and Enjoined mean they may not. Suspension, Voluntary and Inactive indicate a registration that is not currently active. We show the registry's own label rather than simplifying, because "Revoked" and "Inactive" are very different facts about a business.

Every status below carries the date we checked it and a link to the authority that issued it. Registration status changes, a contractor in good standing today can lapse next quarter, so treat a date more than a few weeks old as a prompt to verify directly rather than as a guarantee.

We publish no composite score, trust badge, or ranking built from these fields, and the table defaults to alphabetical order. Combining legal standing into a single number would turn a factual record into an opinion, which is the opposite of what this page is for.
